Titania Michniewicz - Red Phase
My red phase began with the last paintings I completed in my second year painting course at Ottawa University. It had been a challenging year, and I was processing the repressed memories of sexual abuse that happened when I was nine. My world shifted dramatically in the last four months of school: I ended my 4 1/2 year relationship with my live-in boyfriend and decided to transfer out to the University of Victoria to complete my Fine Arts degree (the program at Ottawa University was to be scaled back dramatically while restructuring took place).
After getting settled in Victoria, I turned my focus back to painting. What emerged in my work was an overwhelming attraction to red paint... not just a single shade of red, but any red I could get my hands on.... the more vivid, the better.
The images were large, and disturbing in their intensity, but also very beautiful and symbolic. They effectively conveyed that time of great change and turmoil that brought me to a completely new perspective and life on the West Coast.
